Jeffery Beam and Clive Hicks-Jenkins

In one Welsh wassail folk tradition, a man appears at the door dressed as a skeletal mare. Welsh painter Clive Hicks-Jenkins discovered at his father’s death that he had harbored a terror of the Mari Lwyd all his life, which led Clive to two painting series. In the second, Dark Movements, accomplished in 2015 with poet Jeffery Beam collaborating, the son experiences a sequence of transformations, as does the horse. The son’s grief transforms into New Being. This is a selection of six of the nineteen poems born of the collaboration.
